The Professional Level

The American Organization of Nurse Executives offers a guided vision for excellence in nursing leadership through five foundational competencies. Below you will find a self-assessment of each competency,  examples from my master's program of study, and plans for additional growth opportunity.

Communication & Relationship Building

Expert Competent: Communication and relationship building is a personal and professional strength I hold. It is a skill I developed early in my career and have utilized as the foundation for growth in other competencies along my leadership journey.

Future Development: As this is a natural strength for me, where I need to develop is in the mentoring of the skill set in others.  I also need to work toward inspiring desired behaviors and manage undesired behaviors in others.

Example: In the example provided you will find that I connect this AONE competency to the Benedictine Value of Servant Leadership. It is my belief that relationship management is essential to collaboration in the healthcare environment.

COMPETENCIES

Leadership

Emerging Competence:  I have made significant growth in the last year as it is my second year in the role of a nurse manager.  Improvement in work-life balance and a decrease resistance to standardization have contributed to my increase competency.

Future Growth: Continue to grow in the ability to give and receive feedback as well as humble inquiry. I also need to grow in the ability to facilitate and manage change.

Example: In the leadership example I learned the importance of identification of the various strategic components of a encompassing development plan.

Professionalism

Emerging Competence:  In the past I have been active professionally at the organizational level but not often active at the local or national level.  Through growth in the pursuit of a master's degree as well as professional advancement I have become much more active in my profession.

Future Growth: I need to find opportunities to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession. I also have included AONE certification in my development goals. I also have a poster presentation at the AONE 2019 conference.

Example: In the example provided, I learned the value and skill of advocacy in healthcare.  I also learned the importance of representation of the nursing perspective in the political and policy setting.

Business Skills

Competence:  Business skills has been the most challenging competence to grow in as I am a opportunity and "hands on" learner.  I have grown greatly in the past year and would now consider myself competent.

Future Growth: Though I understand the staffing components of a budget quite well, I need to seek out opportunities in the financial management of supplies in relation to budget and fiscal responsibilities.

Example: The business plan example is one of the assignments from my master's degree program that I am the most proud of and provided a tremendous opportunity for growth. I had very little experience with writing a business plan prior to this assignment.  I now feel that I have a solid foundation if I had to complete one in the professional setting.

Knowledge of the Health Care Environment

Competent: Fifteen years at the bedside and five years of leadership experience have greatly influenced this competency.

Future Growth: Opportunities include learning to facilitate the education of staff on risk management and regulatory compliance issues.

Example: My master's degree journey has brought this competency to a higher level with a greater understanding of evidence-based practice as well as the ability to evaluate literature and evaluate outcomes.
