NUR 613: Leadership & the Future of Nursing ~ Spring 2017

This learning experience was a preceptorship where I formulated my own learning objectives that were in alignment with overall course objectives.  Under the guidance of my Director of Nursing, I chose to complete my clinical experience with the Director of Strategy & Performance Improvement at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.  Much of the clinical experience was conducted through observation and small hands-on activities with the preceptor or members of her team.  This clinical experience provided me growth opportunity by allowing me to gain skills in project management and problem solving.  Below are the four primary objectives of my clinical experience.

  • Learn strategies to the financial considerations in operating performance improvement projects

  • Understand the complexity of budget reductions and the effects on a Performance Improvement Department on staff limitations or the limitations on a project.

  • Understand the Director’s role on how the Performance Improvement Department serves and provides patient centered care

  • Learn different communications methods and styles in leadership

For a complete summation of learning objectives, clinical activities, reflection on learnings, and evaluation of competence, please see the attached Clinical Contract and Objectives Evaluation.

NUR 696/697: Seminar & Service I & II ~ Summer/Fall 2018

In this learning experience, I was a member of a three person intra-professional team for an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project based at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.  In this capstone project, a Central Transport Pool was developed and implemented.  This two semester course, provided me the opportunity to gain high level consultative & leadership acumen that will be utilized in the advancement of my leadership goals and contribute to my ability to transform nursing outcomes. This was achieved through guided coursework that lead to project completion and through the Institutional Review Board approval process.
